Gasboy 1820 ByPass Problems

Thanks for your prompt service re: the re-build kit. Especially for sending
along the large "O" ring, as the old one had been assembled " pinched"
originally and couldn't be re-used.

The pump is up and running and leak-less now, a great improvement. I pump
diesel fuel with it. BUT (always something, aye?) the pump labors badly
unless the nozzle is on; I suspect the bypass isn't working at all. This
old pump has a flat valve plate instead of a pointed stem assembly. The
plate appears to be ceramic, or plastic. I can't figure out how it works,
or how to "clear" any blockage, such as rust. The various parts seem loose
enough and free-working.

If I leave the pump on without passing fuel, the motor labors increasingly,
the motor slowing continuously and I think it will either fail or throw the
breaker eventually.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
